Community First Aid Awareness

Bringing lifesaving skills into the heart of our communities.

Practical skills. A difference that could last a lifetime.

Knowing what to do in an emergency shouldn't be limited to people who need first aid training for their job. The BTR Hub's Community First Aid Awareness Programme has been created to give people from all backgrounds the confidence to recognise an emergency, take action and provide simple first aid while professional help is on its way. Delivered by experienced trainers, our one to two hour interactive sessions can be brought directly into community centres, charities, faith organisations, youth groups, sports clubs and other community settings. No previous first aid knowledge is needed. The emphasis is on making first aid simple, practical, engaging and accessible to everyone.

First Aid Skills Belong in Every Community

When somebody collapses, becomes seriously unwell or suffers an injury, the first person available to help is rarely a healthcare professional. It could be a friend, neighbour, colleague, parent or simply somebody who happens to be nearby. Giving more people basic first aid awareness can help build communities where people feel more confident to step forward and help when somebody needs them. Our Community First Aid Awareness Programme is designed to introduce these skills in an approachable and memorable way — without expecting participants to undertake a full first aid qualification. In just over an hour, we can start building that confidence.

From Football Clubs to Community Groups

The programme has already been delivered as part of a community initiative involving the Metropolitan Police and a Premier League football club, introducing young people to potentially lifesaving first aid skills in an engaging and supportive environment. We are now making the programme available more widely to organisations that want to bring practical first aid awareness into their own communities. We can adapt the style of delivery to suit the group, setting and age range.

What Can We Cover in Under Two Hours?

The session concentrates on straightforward actions that ordinary members of the public can take during the crucial first few minutes of an emergency. Above all, we want participants to leave understanding one important message: You don't have to be a healthcare professional to help save a life. Depending on the audience and requirements of the organisation, topics can include:

Recognising an emergency

Understanding when someone may need urgent help and what to do next.

Calling for help

How to contact the emergency services and provide useful information.

CPR

An introduction to recognising cardiac arrest and performing effective CPR.

Using an AED

Helping to remove some of the uncertainty around public-access defibrillators and showing just how straightforward they are to use.

Choking

Recognising choking and understanding the immediate actions that could save someone's life.

Severe bleeding

Simple actions that can be taken to control serious bleeding while awaiting professional help.

Practical. Interactive. Inclusive.

This isn't an hour of sitting through a presentation. Wherever possible, participants are encouraged to get involved, ask questions, practise skills and learn through demonstration and participation. Sessions are delivered to provide participants with greater support during practical activities and creating a more engaging experience.

We bring the training equipment required for the session to you.
Participants can receive a Certificate of Attendance in Community First Aid Awareness from The BTR Hub, recognising their participation in the programme.
The programme is an awareness session rather than a regulated first aid qualification.
Suitable for community engagement activities where the objective is to introduce potentially lifesaving knowledge to as many people as possible.
